Frank's Fund Helps Save Shelter Animals

Saved in May, 2006...Sadly lost January 22, 2007

Frank was a very special dog to Furry Kids and was saved from the Independence Shelter on his last day.  He was a homeless dog loved by a homeless man who could not care for him and was taken to the shelter.  Furry Kids had to save him.  The picture above is of Frank's back when we got him.  You can see he barely had any fur due to skin infection and yeast.  His skin was bloody, his teeth were rotted, his dew claw was infected, he had 3 BBs in his shoulder and a back ailment causing lameness in his hind quarters.  Over time, we fixed each problem.  His coat grew in like silk, we removed 9 teeth and the dew claw, he gained weight and he started to smile.  We couldn't do anything about the BBs in his shoulder, but we did receive a grant from Orthodog's Silver Lining Foundation to help with the surgery required to fix his back.

The surgery was done just in time.  He would have been paralyzed soon without the surgery because the nerves in his spinal column were so compressed.  The surgery went well and Frank began to walk better.   But, Frank also had an upper respiratory infection that we couldn't seem
to cure.  We tried many different medications but he kept getting worse and worse.  He was suffering.  We made him as comfortable as possible, made sure he had the most comfortable dog beds, gave him his favorite Nutro Midwest Beef Stew pouches of food, carried him up and down stairs, brought bowls of water to him so he wouldn't have to get up, and took him for many rides in "Kim's mobile living room" (a.k.a. - the minivan). Going for rides was his most favorite thing to do.  Frank crossed peacefully to the bridge on January 22, 2007.  He is missed so much.  He touched so many hearts with his sweet eyes and wonderful soul.  He will never be forgotten.

We thank Orthodog's Silver Lining Foundation for writing this beautiful memorial to Frank, scroll to the bottom of the page to read about Frank.

Furry Kids Refuge has created Frank's Fund to help dogs just like Frank and the many others who are in need of saving from area high-kill shelters. The money raised for Frank's Fund will go directly towards saving and helping dogs from the Independence Shelter.  We provide all veterinary care that these animals need.  Many are sick and in desperate need of care.  Furry Kids has always supported the Independence Shelter.  It is a high kill shelter and is where many of our dogs and cats
come from.  We save them before they are euthanized.  It is a tragedy that so many wonderful dogs loose their lives because they end up at city shelters, either turned in by irresponsible owners, seized due to cruelty or improper care, or picked up as stays.

Furry Kids never shies away from the difficult cases like Frank and always have special needs animals in our program.  Frank's Fund will help provide care for these dogs and save as many as possible from the Independence Shelter.  Please, every penny counts.  Please help us heal and help us save.  All donations are so appreciated and are tax deductible as allowed by law.  Please specify your donation is for Frank's Fund.
