| Furry Kids' Long-Time Foster Finally Gets His Forever Home! |
Woody is settling in with his new family, living the good life he has been searching for since 2005 when he joined Furry Kids as just a puppy... |
|
|
He's your average terrier mix with a wiry coat but the sweetest face you could imagine. Woody has always been very timid and shy, without the bubbly personality people are so often drawn to. About 4 weeks ago, a volunteer recommended him to a very nice couple and a few days later...he and 4 other dogs were on their way to their house for a visit. We are so grateful they chose Woody! It was a huge day for Furry Kids when Marcia and Jean picked him up at the Petco in Lee's Summit - it is so meaningful for us when a dog who has been with us for so long finally gets a GREAT forever home! Read more about Woody on our Happy Furry Kids Page....
Does reading this story make you think of giving one of Furry Kids' long-term residents a forever home? Please visit Petfinder.com, those that are towards the end of the lists are those that have been with us the longest. They are GREAT dogs and cats - and would love to be a new member of your family! |

Boomer Becomes a "Canine Good Citizen" ~
 |
Boomer was observed by Canine Good Citizen evaluator Heddie Leger completing all ten of the criteria to obtain the CGC. A dog does not have to be registered or purebred to take and pass the evaluation. The CGC is a good way to help young people learn how to become good citizens, and more responsible pet owners, by helping their pet pass the Canine Good Citizen Evaluation. Once a dog has passed a special collar tag and patch can be ordered. Each passing participant receives an official certificate of congratulations from the AKC.
The CGC consists of ten simple obedience, and proper etiquette exercises that most dogs can master with the help of their owners.
In addition to passing the CGC, Boomer passed a temperament screening. He showed that he would leave an object if told to. He demonstrated non-reactive behavior when another dog came over and took a rawhide chew he had in his possession, and allowed strangers to touch his body, including his leg which is the cause of his physical challenges. Boomer is a very intuitive dog that shows willingness to please, a tenacity to survive, and the ability to adapt to many different people and circumstances. He far surpasses any test that life has dealt him, and continues to amaze everyone with his stable temperament.

Summertime brings rest, relaxation, vacations, and also challenges...
 |
If you are leaving for the summer and have pets that you are taking with you there are some travel tips you might want to consider. We travel extensively with three Rottweilers and while traveling with your pet is fun, it also takes some time to prepare to make your travel more enjoyable.
Some things to think about include: If you are staying with relatives, have a very detailed conversation ahead of time as to the ground rules for your pet’s stay.
- Has your relative met your pet?
- Make sure you bring doggy clean up baggies and never leave piles in your host’s yard.
- If your host does have a pet, make sure the other pets meet in a neutral place like take a walk down the street and have the dogs walk together for a short time to get acquainted.
- If you are staying at a hotel/motel, you will want to call ahead of time to be certain of the arrangements for bringing a pet with you.
- A little preparation ahead of time can make all the difference between an enjoyable trip with your pet or a headache.

Protect You Cat From Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

|
Feline immunodeficiency virus, or FIV, is a retrovirus that affects cats and the clinical disease is similar to HIV in people. FIV is found worldwide and is most prevalent in cats that go outside. Disease is generally spread through saliva, so bite wounds are a major route of transmission, putting male cats at higher risk. A pregnant queen can also pass the virus to her kittens. An infected cat can carry the virus for many years before exhibiting any clinical signs of illness.
Illness in cats from FIV comes as a result of impairment of the immune system. As the immune system weakens, the cat becomes susceptible to other diseases. These can include cancer, urinary tract disease, skin disease, gingivitis and stomatitis in the mouth, chronic diarrhea and anemia. A poor immune system also makes the cat more susceptible to bacteria and viruses, including feline leukemia virus (FeLV).
Blood tests are used to detect FIV. Any new cat should be tested for FIV along with FeLV. There is no treatment for FIV, but a cat with no symptoms can live for many years without problems. These cats should be housed separately from other cats and kept strictly indoors. Once they begin to develop illness related to a failing immune system, they generally deteriorate very rapidly. There is no vaccination available for FIV.

Featured Cat - Clapton - Won't you please consider giving him a loving home?
 |
Meet Clapton in person(Ha! Ha!) this Sat. June 9, at Petco in Lee's Summit, Mo. Petco is located on 50 highway and Chipman Road. We'll be there from 12 - 4.
Pinball, anyone? My husband bought me a used pinball machine for my 50th birthday. The minute it is turned on, here he comes, running to jump on top of the pinball machine to chance the ball around. It makes it difficult sometimes to play a game. But, it's much funner to watch Clapton the Pinball cat.
This absolutely georgous 8 month old guy has come a long way since we first rescued him from a high kill shelter. He was especially fortunate to get another chance at life because Clapton and his momma, Layla were trapped and brought in to the shelter. Clapton and his momma were on the way to be euthanized when a caring shelter volunteer stopped the shelter employee and tried desperately to give this pair of loving kitties a chance to get a home. The shelter worker agreed and a urgent e-mail went out to known animal rescuers pleading for help with their rescue.
Clapton and his mamma Layla, huddled together in the lonely cage and just by looking at them, you knew they deserved love, and a chance for wonderful person to adopt them.
Clapton was so terrified at first, but just needed a little time to see the world wasn't as bad as he had expierenced. His mamma, Layla has been loving since day one.
The day we moved the Pinball machine into our spare room where Clapton and his mamma resided was a day to remember. This shy sweet baby instantly came running and dove on top of the machine. He seemed to forget he was ever scared or shy. He has grown and become a cuddly guy and loves attention.
Won't you please consider Clapton as a new member to your family. His mamma Layla would love to come too. They still love each other, and cuddle just as much as the day they came into my life.
If you would like to adopt Clapton or need more information, please call Deanna or Perry at 816-796-2710 or email us at deanna3344@yahoo.com.
