Join us for Breakfast with Santa Claws December 15th!

Under Applebee’s “Community Connections,” a community outreach program sponsored by Applebee’s® International, Inc., Furry Kids’ Refuge, a non-profit, no-kill, animal rescue organization from Lee’s Summit, Missouri is pleased to announce its Holiday “Flapjack Fundraiser – Breakfast with Santa Claws” on Saturday, December 15, 2007 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar: 205 Melody Lane, Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Local heroes including Furry Kids’ Refuge special needs dog, Boomer, will be there to meet the public.  Our guests will enjoy the spirit of the season, the camaraderie of other animal lovers, and a plentiful breakfast of pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice (or other soft drinks), and coffee.

Kim Accurso, President of Furry Kids’ Refuge states “We are touched by the kind and generous support we continue to receive from Applebee’s.  Events like ‘Breakfast with Santa Claws’ allow us to celebrate our 2007 successes with our wonderful community of volunteers and donors, without whom we could not continue to save the lives of hundreds of animals each year.”

As Janet Barber, Fundraising Chairwoman, explains “Furry Kid’s Refuge is an all-volunteer organization.  At any one time we have about 80 dogs and cats under our care.  They depend on the gifts and generosity of this community.  This holiday event will help us raise funds needed to provide safe haven, feed, foster, and find permanent homes for the animals in our care.  We hope that all our friends and neighbors will come out to celebrate the season with us!”

In recognition of the generosity of this community to Furry Kids Refuge, tickets purchased in advance of the event will be offered at a special early bird rate of $5 each and will be available for online purchase at www.furrykidsrefuge.org, or at Furry Kids’ Refuge adoption events, held each Saturday at Lee’s Summit Petco (1860 N.W. Chipman Road, Lee’s Summit, Missouri).   Tickets may also be purchased at the door

Keep your pets safe and healthy this winter season ~

Dogs and cats need special care when the mecury drops during the winter months. Even with thick undercoats, animals don't fair well in the cold so here are some tips to keep your loved ones safe this winter:

  • When bathing your pets, make sure their coats are dry before they go outdoors. Ice can form quickly on a wet coat. Don't shave down your dog during the winter as the longer coat and the undercoat provide warmth. If your dog has a short coat, consider putting a sweater on him or her when they go outside.
  • Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs and may be hard to housetrain during the winter. Consider paper training or using "potty pads" to help housetrain while it's cold outside.
  • Antifreeze is a lethal poison to animals. Make sure to keep your pets away from any possibility of coming in to contact with antifreeze - they will lick it because it is sweet tasting. Wipe down paws after walking where they might have come into contact because even licking paws after exposure can cause death. For more information, visit the ASPCA Poison Control Center.
  • Just like during the hot summer months, do not leave a pet unattended in a car. They can quickly freeze to death in cold temperatures!
  • Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep. A warm doggie bed or kitty bed is ideal, up off the floor and away from chilly drafts.
  • If there are outdoor cats in your area, beware of them hiding under the hood of your car. They will seek out the warmth of the engine and when you start your car, they can be killed by the fan belt. Knock on the hood of your car before starting it to make sure there are no critters hiding out there.
  • All pets should be kept indoors at all times during the year but they are especially suseptible to the cold because when it snows or if there is ice, they can easily suffer from encrusted paws and coats. Beware of salts that can damage paws, when it's time to melt the driveway and sidewalks, choose an environmentally and pet safe ice melt product!

A HUGE Thank you is in order for the KaCSFFS for choosing Furry Kids as their adopted Charity for the 2nd year in a row! Lily, a Border Collie pup, got to come in to the hotel to visit all the group members during the charity auction, and as we walked into the ballroom, it was an "aahhhhh" all in unison!

This year's conference beat last year's by about $400! Thanks to the generous members of the KaCSFF, you've given a second chance to 4 heartworm positive Beagles and 1 Great Dane by raising enough for us to get their heartworm treatments completed!
