Furry Kids' Labor Day Food Drive Was A Success!

Furry Kids' great supporters came through in our last minute Labor Day Food Drive effort...

Furry Kids keeps an average of 50 dogs and 20 cats in our program, which calculates to, well...a lot of food! We were running extremely low prior to Labor Day so we had the idea to have a food drive at Petco on Labor Day Weekend. The email went out on Friday morning to all our supporters and all you wonderful people came through to help. We recieved $170.00 in monetary donations and 1322 pounds of dry food. Not only did we receive food but a lot of treats, bones and toys too! We go through approximately 300 pounds of food per week so we are always needing quality dog and cat food.

Since this food drive was such as success, we've decided to do it again the weekend of October 27th, just before Halloween. So, bring your dressed up pets to Petco to see us and donate a bag of food! :)

Furry Kids Helps Two Special Needs Dogs

Cole was saved from the Leavenworth Animal Control Shelter in November of 2006 - he was just about a year old at the time and was an owner surrender. They knew he had hip dysplasia and we knew that would deter potential adopters decreasing his chance at adoption from their shelter. His time came and we couldn't let him go - we had to save him. He's a GREAT dog, all around typical Black Lab - joyful, friendly, loves people and other dogs. It was our plan to give Cole the surgery he needed to alleviate the pain from the hip dysplasia but with Boomer's upcoming surgery, we had been concentrating on raising funds for him. One day, an application came in from an absolutely wonderful family who had fallen in love with Cole on Petfinder.com. We told them all about Cole's problems and they still wanted to pursue adoption! So, we applied for a grant from LabMed and they were able to help us with a $200 grant which paid for about half his surgery! Cole had a Femoral Head & Neck Osteotomy on his right hip - it was a success and he is recovering nicely and has been adopted by the Muenks family in Lee's Summit and is living happily ever after. What a success story Cole has - he is definately a Happy Furry Kid!

Miso was taken in by Furry Kids in April of 2007 from a breeder in central Missouri when he was just about 10 weeks old. Miso and his brother both had problems and would have been put to sleep by the breeder. Miso, a darling tan Shiba Inu, had a luxating patella and we knew it was going to require surgery once he was old enough. He reached the point where he wasn't using his leg much at all and we knew it was time to help him. So...off to the vet we go for an exam, XRay and to talk about a plan of action. The doctors said they could do the surgery that afternoon so we went ahead and said OK to proceed. The patella was lodged to the side to severly to completely fix. It was so severe that the doctors think even a specialist would not be able to fix the knee. We also found out during the exam that Miso has a heart murmur and enlarged heart. He will have to be on medication for the rest of his life for this disorder. His knee is unrepairable and he doesn't walk on it so there is always the possiblity of doing an amputation in the future. Miso's surgery, medications and ECG of the heart cost Furry Kids $575 - very worth it to help this little boy. We are so grateful that one of our dedicated fosters agreed to adopt Miso - he would be a very hard boy to find a home for that would accept the responsibility of taking care of both his knee and his heart throughout his lifetime. Sara and Jeff will be wonderful parents to Miso and will take great care of him!

Separation Anxiety: A Common Challenge With Adopted Dogs...

Separation anxiety is reportedly one of the most common challenges many dog owners face.  It is especially challenging for those who foster and work with adoptions of animals.  The first indication is that items in the home may have been destroyed, or neighbors complain about constant barking or howling when no one is home to care for the pet.

Dogs are pack animals and do not like to be alone.  Some will wait patiently, while others will go into a panic mode of behavior.  Some destroy things, bark, whine, urinate or deficate in your absence.  Those that have experienced a traumatic experience such as loosing their home or other trauma are more likely to exhibit these behaviors.

There are varying perspective on what causes these behaviors in an otherwise wonderful companion dog, and a myriad of methods in changing this behavior.  Dogs like humans are unique individuals, and not every method will work on every dog.  Like all fears, finding an approach that will help desensitize a particular dog is always a challenge. Protect Your Pets and Yourself From Tick-Borne Illnesses

Fall’s coming but don’t let down your guard when it comes to tick prevention for your animals or yourself.  Ticks (small, spider-like parasites) attach to skin and feed on blood.  While most tick bites do not result in disease, tick bites should never be ignored.

In man and beast, early signs of tick-borne disease are fairly similar.  Symptoms may include rashes, fever, fatigue, swelling, appetite changes, weight loss, headaches, muscle or joint pain, and other cold or flu-like symptoms. Early medical attention is critical for successful treatment of these diseases.  In addition to prescribing medication, the doctor can run blood tests to pinpoint the disease. Click here for more information on tick-borne illnesses....

Featured Cat - Clapton - Won't you please consider giving him a loving home?

Meet Clapton in person(Ha! Ha!) this Sat. June 9, at Petco in Lee's Summit, Mo. Petco is located on 50 highway and Chipman Road. We'll be there from 12 - 4.
Pinball, anyone? My husband bought me a used pinball machine for my 50th birthday. The minute it is turned on, here he comes, running to jump on top of the pinball machine to chance the ball around. It makes it difficult sometimes to play a game. But, it's much funner to watch Clapton the Pinball cat.
This absolutely georgous 8 month old guy has come a long way since we first rescued him from a high kill shelter. He was especially fortunate to get another chance at life because Clapton and his momma, Layla were trapped and brought in to the shelter. Clapton and his momma were on the way to be euthanized when a caring shelter volunteer stopped the shelter employee and tried desperately to give this pair of loving kitties a chance to get a home. The shelter worker agreed and a urgent e-mail went out to known animal rescuers pleading for help with their rescue.
Clapton and his mamma Layla, huddled together in the lonely cage and just by looking at them, you knew they deserved love, and a chance for wonderful person to adopt them.
Clapton was so terrified at first, but just needed a little time to see the world wasn't as bad as he had expierenced. His mamma, Layla has been loving since day one.
The day we moved the Pinball machine into our spare room where Clapton and his mamma resided was a day to remember. This shy sweet baby instantly came running and dove on top of the machine. He seemed to forget he was ever scared or shy. He has grown and become a cuddly guy and loves attention.
Won't you please consider Clapton as a new member to your family. His mamma Layla would love to come too. They still love each other, and cuddle just as much as the day they came into my life.
