FURRY KIDS HOLDING "BLACK COAT AND TAIL" ADOPTION EVENT JUNE 28

Big black dogs than dogs of any other size or color? Why do they not attract potential adopters?

The Petco Foundation is helping to sponsor a very special adoption day during which only our big black dogs and black cats will be availble for adoption. Black Dog Syndrome strikes so many animals in shelters and rescues around the country - they are just simply not noticed like dogs of varying colors and coat types, and the same applies to black cats.

We have had many of our large black dogs for up to and over a year. Our hope is that people will look beyond color - and see the dog himself. Look how wonderful his temperament is, how wonderful with kids he is, what a good leash-walker he is, what a wonderful, loyal companion he would be. When I come home each day to my own big black dogs, I see beautiful shiny coats, wagging tails and endearing eyes - ones I will love forever. I don't think I could live without my own big black dogs. They are mutts of unknown heritage who, in my own eyes, are the best dogs ever.

KITTEN SEASON IS UPON US, EMERGENCY RESCUE EFFORTS ABOUND

The spring and summer season bring warm weather, blue skies and lots of fun times with our families. It also brings something else...thousands and thousands of unwanted litters of kittens. This time of year is known as "kitten season" to area shelters and rescues. The local kill shelters are flooded with pregnant cats, moms with litters of kittens and tiny kittens without moms. Unfortunately, the fate of these cats and kittens is grim. Most will never leave the shelters and will be euthanized because there aren't enough homes for them all. This sad reality is a direct result of people not spaying and neutering their pets.

Furry Kids Refuge recently rescued seven litters of kittens from the Independence MO Animal Shelter. Since foster homes are scarce, four of these litters were placed into another reputable rescue where foster homes were available. Three of these litters remain with Furry Kids and are looking for homes now. Many of these kittens developed upper respiratory illness, like a cold, which is very common when in the shelter environment. Furry Kids members have spent countless hours forcefeeding them when they were too sick to eat, giving them sub Q fluids, taking them to the vet, giving meds, etc. One of these kittens, named Petunia, was brought to the shelter alone as a stray at just a few weeks of age. Furry Kids knew she didn't stand a chance at surviving there, so as soon as she was available, she was rescued and taken into foster care. One day, she didn't eat enough and her glucose dropped quickly to an extremely severe level. When her foster parent returned from work, she thought Petunia was dead, but then she gasped for air. Petunia was immediately was rushed to the animal emergency clinic as her foster mom gave rescue breaths as they drove. At the clinic, Petunia received life-saving treatment which included bloodwork, continuous IV-fluids, a tube down her throat to help her breathe, fecal and more. She survived and the next morning was her bright-eyed self. The foster parent took her to work every day to make sure she ate enough and now she is doing fine and is completely well and growing bigger each day! Petunia's bill reached $600 at the ER alone, in addition to all the other fees for the upper respiratory for the litters.  Furry Kids does whatever it takes to keep our animals healthy and we are only able to do this with contributions from the public. We appreciate them so much and so do our furry kids! We would be very grateful for any donations that can be made toward Petunia's bill or any of the kittens we have in our rescue right now. You may make a tax-detuctible contribution through our PayPal account found on our website. Please make a note when donating that it is for Petunia's bill. Also, make sure to check out our wonderful cats and kittens up for adoption and waiting for a home of their own! Featured Dog - Angel - Who wouldn't love those big ears?

Angel is a wonderful shepherd mix weighing about 50 pounds. She is around 3 years old and is very intelligent - her foster mom says she's the smartest dog she's ever fostered - and just as sweet! Angel is a bit of a bossy girl so she needs someone who is going to provide her the execise and attention she needs. She's make a GREAT jogging or walking partner! Her foster mom has taught her to sit, stay, off and down. She's beautiful and so deserving of a loving forever home! Would you be interested in giving Angel that home? Visit her Petfinder page for more information!

Spring Food Drive Provides Many Meals for Rescued Dogs and Cats!

'Thank You For Keeping Our Bellies Full!'

Many generous folks donated dog and cat food during our Spring Food Drive, totally over 300 pounds. In addition, over $700 was donated to help us purchase more food supplies! Furry Kids volunteers took a trip to Sam's Club and loaded up the van with high quality food.

We are so appreciative of everyone who donated - we try desperately to keep the animals on a quality diet because so many have never had good nutrition during their lives. So, Thank You to everyone who contributed!!

Boomer Undergoes Knee Surgery

Boomer underwent a TPLO knee surgery on his left knee on Wednesday, June 4 at Mission Med Vet. The surgery was successful and he is at home recovering with his foster mom, Danielle.

As usual, his is in great spirits and is wanting to do more than he is allowed to :) Danielle will get him through his recovery as we await word from Alameda when the implant is ready. There is an estimated delivery date in 6-8 weeks.

It has been a challenge to wait for the implant to be ready. We are grateful for Biometrix taking the time to construct the implant, this company does this on the side and in the past year, they have had many othe important projects going on. So, we will wait for word from Denver and when they are ready for us....we will jump in the van and head west!
