Furry Kids Helping Those Who Cannot Help Themselves

Our organization strongly believes that all animals deserve respect and should be treated with dignity in all circumstances. We strive to have all people share this philosophy, creating a healthier and kinder community for humans and animals alike.

In congruence with that part of our mission statement, here is a great udpate about Georgia and a bit about our newest Furry Kid, Ray.

There is hope in helping those who need us the most.

Miss Georgia has proven to be a real fighter!  With the dedicated care of her foster parents, she has been improving daily.  We sincerely believe that the care we can give within our foster homes to very sick animals improves their chances of surviving life threatening illnesses because these animals are more apt to feel secure, comfortable and loved than if they were kept in a stressful shelter environment.  Her fosters gave her fluids and medications daily, kept her warm and comfortable (a 24/7 job!) and within a week, she was up and wagging her tail to greet her foster mom.  She has chosen her favorite spot to sleep:  her foster dad's bath robe - and she chose that spot over several comfy doggie beds!  She has her little toy that she carries around so gently, never harming the soft pink bunny and every once in a while giving it a little squeek.  She must have the little pink bunny next to her while she sleeps!  She's gone from a mere 17 pounds with her skeleton completely visible to over 23 pounds now - you can no longer see her bones protruding! What na amazing recovery for this very strong girl who is just full of life. Soon, she will be available for adoption so if you're thinking about adopting a very special dog - she might just be the one!

Furry Kids has rescued another dog in dire need.  Last Sunday, we received a call from a woman who adopted a very special girl named Jenny a couple of years ago.  She'd found this boy at her workplace - as if he were waiting for her.  He was taken to one of Furry Kids' foster homes and named Raymond.  This pure bred German Shepherd has a very sweet tempermant but faces serious physical issues - and he's less than 2 years old.

Ray's Veterinary Evaluation:
Head injury to left side causing blindness in left eye and possible hearing loss
Left eye also has slight ulceration
Head injury causing lameness on right side of body making walking difficult
Other possible orthopedic issues in back and hips
Emaciation:  65lbs but should be 80-85lbs
Parasitie Infection:  Whipworms and Hookworms
Anemia
Heartworms

Part of Furry Kids' mission is to help animals with special needs .  Both Ray and Georgia are classic examples of dogs with special needs.  Ray is at home in foster care, and we are treating the anemia and killing the parasites.  This is just the first step in helping Ray regain enough strength to undergo heartworm treatment and further evaluation of orthopedic and neurological issues.  Ray is a beautiful dog and is very sweet and gentle and like all animals, he deserves a chance.  A like Georgia, Ray is receiving constant care and we will take one step at a time, addressing each issue as he gets stronger.  We are hopeful that Ray's head injury is not so severe that he can have quality of life once the other issues are resolved.

From his foster mom: One week after rescuing Ray, his condition is about the same. He does like to eat and loves dried chicken strips. He really likes eggs and ham, his foster dad cooks him that for supper. It doesn't appear he's gainged any weight just yet but we are working on it. He has shown some responsiveness to us and follows me around. He will even get up to find me if he can't see me. That makes me feel pretty special and gives me a lot of hope for him!

HIPPITY HOPPITY FLAPJACK FUNDRAISER - HUGE SUCCESS!

It was cold Saturday morning, March 8th, but at least it wasn't raining or snowing! Volunteers arrived at 6:30 to start setting up and preparing. We were ready at 8am for our first customers. From there, Applebee's filled up fast! At a couple points, all the tables were full and there was a wait! Even the Furry Kids volunteers were serving plates and helping to bus tables. It was great! This was the best turnout yet for one of our Applebee's Flapjack Fundraisers and we are so appreciative of all the support.

We were able to raise a little over $1600 - which will be used towards our veterinary expenses that are going through the roof! This helps Furry Kids tremendously during this difficult time.

Essy and Chance (ADOPT ME!!) were allowed to parade through and everyone got to give precious Boomer a pat. The kids got prizes from the egg tub and we had GREAT raffles! We also had wonderful baked goods that seemed to be a real hit with the customers!

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this event such a great success. Thank you to the following companies for donating raffle items!

TWO LONG TERM RESIDENTS FINALLY FOUND THEIR FOREVER HOME!

Haley was rescued by Furry Kids in 2005 and had been living with us ever since. She is a gorgeous English Pointer who has a great personality but she was hard to find a forever home for because she could clear a 4' fence with no problem at all! Finally, a fabulous family saw her on Petfinder.com who had just the perfect home for her and they fell in love with her immediately! Thank you to the Morris family for giving her such a wonderful life! You can read her Happy Furry Kid story on our website!

I guess I have to find a new Featured Pet because Bernie is finally with a new forever family, too! What a great month for us to have these two long term residents finally find their forever homes. Amazingly, Bernie had gone with a new foster mom a couple of weeks before the Roberts family saw him on Petfinder.com. He got to travel the country and go to Canada! Now, he is loved and settled in to his new forever home - what a happy boy!

Featured Dog - Angel - Who wouldn't love those big ears?

Angel is a wonderful shepherd mix weighing about 50 pounds. She is around 3 years old and is very intelligent - her foster mom says she's the smartest dog she's ever fostered - and just as sweet! Angel is a bit of a bossy girl so she needs someone who is going to provide her the execise and attention she needs. She's make a GREAT jogging or walking partner! Her foster mom has taught her to sit, stay, off and down. She's beautiful and so deserving of a loving forever home! Would you be interested in giving Angel that home? Visit her Petfinder page for more information!

Featured Cat - Scamp - Meet him in person because the camera can't catch his all beauty, he's still searching for his forever family!

Scamp is a beautiful little boy who would love to have a new family! He is sweet and cuddly and loves people and affection. He also likes other cats and even those pesky dogs!

To learn more about Scamp, you can visit her Petfinder page or fill out an application online to meet Scamp in person! His pictures don't do him justice so contact us today to meet her!

IN MEMORY OF CARLENE DANIELS

Furry Kids would like to thank the kindness of Jim Daniels, friend, continued supporter and adopter, for requesting donations be made to Furry Kids in loving memory of his mother, Carlene. Carlene was an animal lover and mom to DJ, adopted from Furry Kids in 2006, who sadly passed away on January 28, 2008. She has been described, "as one of the nicest people God ever created ", by her husband, Harold Daniels.
