November is National Adopt A Senior Dog Month!

Senior pets continue to fill rescues and shelters, bringing with them some unique benefits, as well as some challenges.  With a senior pet, you might think there are more veterinary expenses to be considered since seniors are thought to be more at risk to develop conditions that require treatment.  That may be true but then again you won’t have to pay for all those puppy shots either! And there is the challenge of knowing that you may not have years and years to spend together.  Although you may have less time together, the time that you will have is time that you and your senior pet will treasure forever.

I thought about those things, especially the amount of time left, when I adopted my Darla.  She was already 10 years old…how much longer would she live?  What I decided was that it didn’t matter if it was another 10 years or 10 days…this dog “deserved” to live the rest of her life in comfort.  Darla’s life before Furry Kids was horrible and yet she is the sweetest, gentlest dog you will ever meet.  She loves everyone and does not hold a grudge against the past sins of her humans.

So what are the benefits of adopting a senior pet?  Here are just a few …

  • Tend to be calmer, more mellowDarla is happy with the simple things in life…a cozy place to sleep (my bed!), good food (including lots of treats), and visits to the Doggie Park
  • Easily trainedDarla is graduating from her Canine Good Citizen class next week and all I had to do was enroll her…she knows all the commands!
  • Adjust quicklyit took no time at all for Darla to train me!
  • Grateful for a second chance There is no feeling quite like seeing your senior pet curled up and finally comfortable…knowing that they will now always be cared for and loved!

Happy PappyBailey

Senior pets are just as loveable and can bring you just as much joy as a puppy.  They just need to be given a chance.  If you’re looking to add a dog to your family, please consider opening your heart to a senior.   Take a peek at "Happy Pappy" and "Bailey"…they are both wonderful dogs in need of loving homes. Maybe one of them would make a wonderful companion for you!

ELLE'S PLEA FOR HELP....
kk

ElleElle (rhymes with Kelly) is a Boxer female, about 2 years old, 51 pounds (needs another 5 pounds), loves other dogs, loves people, loves toys, especially loves carrying one in her mouth, her butt never stops wiggling with happiness---she is awesome!  We rescued her when Animal Control Officer Amy with the Harrisonville/Peculiar Animal Shelter called to tell us about a awesome dog who always had her food bowl in her mouth when workers came by and never stopped wiggling her butt from being so happy and excited to see people! They have a very small holding area for animals and when Elle's time was up and no one claimed her, they couldn't stand the thought of euthanizing this wonderful dog. Furry Kids' Refuge made the drive to Harrisonville and took Elle to Crain Veterinary Center in Blue Springs for her spay, vaccinations and heart worm test. Elle tested positive for heart worms and will need heart worm treatment as soon as possible. We are asking for your help in raising the money needed to pay for her treatment. All donations are tax deductible since we are a non-profit 501c3 organization. Our group has paid for the heart worm treatment of 15 dogs in 2009. If you can help, please click on the Donate button above. We THANK YOU for any donation you can give Elle for her treatment.

MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

Helga As you know, Furry Kids has a special place for special needs dogs.  Knowing that we are sometimes just giving a final resting place for a dog who has lived a hard life, we do our very best to provide the most love and best care for an aging dog.  This past March, we rescued an old shepherd mix from the Independence Shelter.  A plea for help for her had gone out over email and we just couldn't look past her, her picture drew us in.  She was a big dog, covered almost 100% in mats and was just filthy dirty.  According to the shelter workers, all she did was lay around and barely got up to potty.  She needed us.  We carried "Helga" out of the shelter and off to the vet we went.  From there, several Furry Kids volunteers helped to brush and brush and brush her.  She seemed to love the attention - almost smiling.  She didn't have very many teeth, and those she had were worn down.  After a long bath and a shave down, she turned in to a beautiful dog.  She did just lay around most of the time, but now and then enjoying treats and even nylabones - and she even played with a stuffed toy!

The funniest thing about Helga is that she absolutely would not walk on a leash.  She didn't even like having a collar on.  So, for potty time, we'd go out front and follow her around the front yard.  A turtle's pace was almost faster than Helga's pace so we never feared her getting away from us.  She'd do her thing and then come right back in, seemingly so happy to have a soft blanket to return to.  She'd bark when she wanted to go outside and when it was time to eat.  Barking while laying down, tossing her head around, telling everyone all about it.

In June, Helga suffered bloat, which is where the stomach distends and twists. It can be very deadly.  We rushed her to the emergency hospital where she was very lucky to survive the needed surgery.  It was risky because of her age, and it was expensive but her fosters gifted the expense, but it was well worth it.  We doted on her during her recovery, changed her diet and she healed beautifully with good prognosis.

As old dogs do, Helga suffered terrible arthritis and a few other minor things while she was with us but a few weeks ago she woke up earlier than normal, barking and wanting to go out.  We went out front and she laid down.  We knew something was terribly wrong.  We got her back inside and saw her stomach was extremely swollen.  We rushed her to the emergency hospital, just like we did in June.  She had bloat again.  We never thought this would happen to her again.  The doctor relieved her somewhat, but with xrays a large mass in her abdomen, likely cancer, was found.  With this news, there was really nothing we could do.  The doctor thought the kindest thing we could do for her would be to let her go.  It took no debate, we could not allow her to suffer and knowing that a surgery would be too extensive and without a good prognosis, we just couldn't do it to her.  She passed in our arms, hopefully knowing how much she was loved and how much she would be missed.

As a group, we rescue so many well adjusted, healthy, young dogs who find loving forever homes quickly.  We can't forget the dogs who we know will not be adopted, those who are old or have other issues that make them not-so-highly adoptable.  Dogs like Helga deserve so much, too, and we wish people would realize the love they can give you even if they are with us for just a short amount of time.  Helga became a huge part of our lives in a short amount of time.  We just don't realize how much our lives begin to revolve around an old dog's routines and needs and when they are gone, there is such a huge loss.  We wish Helga would have been with us for a very long time, but sadly we only had the pleasure of knowing her for 8 months.

As a good friend says, "I'm bettin' Helga is still with you. She is with all the other dogs that you touch, heal, and love.  She is in soft breezes on your face and in the twinkle in the stars at night. She touches you so softly that you don't feel it, yet you sense her there, and you know it. She's in the raindrops that fall on your face and she's in the tears that roll down your cheeks. She still lives in that special hole in your heart, even though you feel it is empty -- it is not, she is there. Now, she knows and understands worlds more than you or ever hope to, as long as you are here.  Listen for her, look for her. She is not gone and will never leave you".

A HUGE Thank You goes out to Mackenzie for selflessly giving up Birthday gifts and asking, instead, for gifts for the Furry Kids Refuge animals. Mackenzie, who turned 10 years old recently, didn't want any presents for herself but instead asked for donations for the animals. As you can see from the picture, Mackenzie's friends brought lots of food and goodies! We are so thankful to Mackenzie for her generosity...what she did was very thoughtful and I'm sure made her family very proud. We are proud of her too and we are very appreciative!!
