KEEP YOUR FURRY KIDS SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS
|
 The Holidays often means a lot of food, food, food!! While this may be just what you're looking forward to, keep in mind that while it may be tasty to the human palette, it can be lethal to your pet. You probably already know that chocolate is toxic to dogs, but did you know that they shouldn't eat raisins or grapes? Then there is the hidden danger of ingredients such as xylitol which is a sweetener found in many types of gum, mints, candy, and pastries. Consuming even a small amount of xylitol can give a dog seizures, low blood sugar, liver failure, and can even be fatal.
People tend to do a lot more cooking at this time of year also. So while you're preparing those scrumptious meals, keep in mind that things like alcohol, onions, yeast dough, and macadamia nuts may be just what the recipe calls for but the dog doesn't need a taste! While seemingly harmless, any of these items can all lead to stomach upset, diarrhea or pancreatitis.  Mallone came to Furry Kids' Refuge from a local kill shelter when his time had run out and no one claimed him. When we picked him up from the shelter he was skin and bones from prior neglect and immediately went to our veterinary center for care. He spent several days there recovering from upper respiratory illness, malnourishment, parasites, etc.. For awhile we thought we might lose Mallone, but his strong will to survive pulled him through. Fast forward several months... Mallone has found a FANTASTIC forever home AND he has his own blog! Here's a note from his forever family...
"We love Mallone!!!!!! He has been the greatest gift....he makes us smile and laugh everyday! The only member of our family that is still adjusting is the cat...we are taking baby steps and it keeps getting better...she is kind of stubborn! I can do better....I have a blog! I will give you a link and we add photos almost daily. I do it for my daughters 4th grade class in Texas....they all love Mallone too! Thanks for taking good care of him before we got him.......Mallone's Forever Family"

Garrett is just the sweetest, gentlest, most loving pup and gets along great with all other dogs! He has the best temperament and would be a great companion to most any family. Garrett does great with kids !! |
 My name is Bindi and I'm a female, about 2 years old. I was rescued as a stray and my foster Mom says I am just a 'super sweetie'. I am very calm and social. I would love to be held and curl up on a nice warm lap! Are you available??

 Do you buy Best Choice products? If so, you can help Furry Kids raise money to help support our rescue animals! Through the Save-A-Label program, we will earn $.03 for each Best Choice UPC symbol redeemed. While it doesn't sound like a lot of money, every little bit helps when you are a Non-Profit organization!!
How can you help? Just collect the labels of Best Choice products and save the UPC portion (proof of purchase) It's not necessary to save the whole label. You can drop-off your UPC labels at our weekly adoption events (see below for specifics) or you can mail them to:

Got Blankets?
|
Furry Kids' is in need of kennel blankets for the upcoming winter months. If you have some new or used blankets that you would like to donate, our Furry Kids would appreciate it very much! You can drop off them off, from 11am to 4pm, every Saturday at our adoption events held at the Lee's Summit Petco located in Summit Woods Crossing.

Our Applebee's Fundraiser, held on December 4th, 2010, was a lot of fun and raised $3000. We had lots of great raffle items donated making this another great fundraiser with the money raised going to help pay for our veterinary expenses and buying more food!!!
HUGE THANKS goes out to all of our donors and supporters for again making this fundraiser a success. Also, a special shout-out to our fantastic volunteers who went above and beyond this year!! You are all AWESOME!!

Our Spring Rummage Sale is scheduled for April 8-10, 2011. This event will again be held at the VFW Hall on Douglas St., in downtown Lee's Summit. So, please keep us in mind as you start to clean out those closets!! Watch future newsletters for more details.
