Did you Know??

Jenny
Daphney
Black dogs, particularly large black dogs like Labradors or Lab mixes, have a very difficult time getting adopted, and are euthanized at a staggering rate at many animal control facilities throughout the country. This phenomenon is so common it even has a name: Black Dog Syndrome, it's a problem that makes a black dog the underdog of all rescued dogs.

For most people, when they decide to adopt a family member, they are not consciously thinking, “We do not want a black dog.” But somehow, for some unknown reason, the majority of adopters steer away from black dogs. While there are no hard statistics, there are several theories. Maybe it's because people think they look mean or they associate the color black with evil or superstition. Maybe it's that people are afraid the black hair will show up more around the house, or it could be that they don't photograph or show well so they are just overlooked.

Whatever the reason, consciously or unconsciously, Black Dog Syndrome is a very real problem!! Take a look at the faces around this article. These are our Furry Kids...some of these dogs have been with us for a very long time! They are just as deserving of a great forever home as any other dog. The color of the dog's coat has no affect on the dogs temperament and personality. Black dogs are just as playful, loving and fun as dogs of other colors, and their Doggie kisses are just as sweet!

When adopting your next best friend, please be aware that Black Dog Syndrome is very real. Don't overlook the black dogs...take a second look... make an effort to see ALL of the dogs. Make your decision based soley on the dog that will be the best fit for your family regardless of the color of his coat...you'll be glad you did! Click on any of these pictures to find out more about these wonderful Black Dogs!!

Way to go, Old Navy!!Lauren Anderson, pictured here, stopped by our Petco adoption event one Saturday to deliver shopping carts full of Dog food and supplies. Lauren works at the Old Navy store located at 1656 Chipman Rd, in the Summit Woods Shopping Center. She and her fellow Old Navy employees decided to help Furry Kids by collecting dog food and supplies during the Christmas season. We are very, very grateful to everyone at Old Navy for thinking of Furry Kids. The donations made will help us to feed our animals through the winter season when adoptions are at their slowest. THANK YOU, Old Navy...your generosity and thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated!!

FURRY KID "CAUGHT IN THE ACT "

Yummy!Champ loves the snow.  He played in it while I cleaned the driveway and we made a snowman.   He ate the first carrot nose as you can see in the picture.   I didn't have much snowman material.  The neighbors just shake their heads and smile as they drive by...BillWhat can I say...I like carrots!

MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

d

MiloHe was known to us as Jed first, one of 8 beagles seized by KCMO Animal Control in a animal cruelty case. He was an older dog but just as sweet and gentle as could be, but terribly shy. Jed was lucky enough to be adopted by a wonderful family who named him Milo. With an older dog, you just never know what you're getting, however, it didn't seem to matter with Milo's family...he found a "forever" home where he was cared for with patience and love.

This note is from Milo's forever Mom...

Last year I adopted a beagle from your organization. His name was Jed then; we renamed him Milo. I was told he was six or seven years old when I adopted him, but my own vet disagreed and thought he was around twelve or thirteen.

He never seemed to be properly housebroken, although we worked and worked with him. We knew he was an adult dog, which makes housebreaking more of a challenge, and we're used to cleaning up pet messes, so it wasn't a big problem. He was just the sweetest, most adorable dog!!!! He was incredibly good natured and when he slept, his tongue would be sticking out of his mouth. He was always so patient with the kids and our chihuahua, Ty. His favorite things were: napping, eating, snuggling and napping. He snored so loud!!!! Sometimes his snoring would keep me awake at night! Milo was such a blessing and such a comfort to me.

Unfortunately, his housebreaking problem had an organic basis, and earlier this year we noticed an increasing amount of blood in his puddles. We could find no stones and several courses of antibiotics did not help. Eventually, my Milo was diagnosed with bladder cancer. With his age and the fact that bladder surgery in a male can be tricky due to the position of the prostate, we chose palliative care. He really hated wearing a diaper, although we did the best we could, and he had several blankets of his very own to help with cleanup. (He slept on my bed, which was often a rather damp experience.)

Last month I finally had him put to sleep.

That dog was the sweetest tempered, most loving dog I have ever known. It was a privilege to be his mom. Thank you so much for letting me adopt my precious boy. He was just the BEST!
"

Milo would never have had known love and kindness if not for his forever family. We hope that Milo will be waiting on the bridge for his family someday, we pray that they will see him again. He was truly loved and is truly missed by his forever family AND his rescuers. Rest in peace, Milo.
