THOUGHTFUL CHILDREN!! SUPER KIDS !!!

Thank You, Elliot!!

Elliot Grotzinger and her Mom recently stopped by our Petco Adoption event to drop-off 10 bags of home-made organic dog treats, some toys and a cash donation. Where did all this come from? Elliot's 6th Birthday Party, of course!! You see, Elliot loves dogs (check out her t-shirt in the photo...:-) ) and she has two great dog of her own, Lola and Linus, which her family adopted from Furry Kids' Refuge.

So, when it came time to plan Elliot's 6th Birthday party, Elliot and her family decided to do something nice for the Furry Kids' rescue animals. Elliot's Mom says that Elliot and her friends had a really great time making the dog treats...which were in all different shapes and several scrumptious flavors (at least that's what the dogs said!)

THANK YOU, Elliot..for your thoughtfulness and for being such a fantastic supporter of Furry Kids' Refuge!! P. S. the dogs said anytime you want to make more treats, they will eat them!!

Thanks, Travis!!A HUGE Thank You goes out to the O'Bannon family and their son, Travis Kalt, for selflessly giving up Birthday gifts and asking, instead, for gifts for the Furry Kids Refuge animals. Travis, who turned 7 years old in December, is a great animal lover. For his Birthday, Travis didn't want any presents for himself but instead asked for donations for the animals. As you can see from the picture, Travis' friends brought lots of goodies including toys, treats, collars, leashes & more! We are so thankful to Travis for his generosity...what he did was very thoughtful and I'm sure made his family very proud. We are proud of him too and we are very appreciative! THANK YOU, Travis!!

RedmondHi...I'm Redmond, a Red Heeler mix and I'm about 18 months old. I live with a foster family that has both a dog and a cat. I love to run, wrestle, and play with my foster brother. I don't bark much but if I get excited I might talk to you. I need a nice yard with at least a 5' fence 'cuz otherwise I could jump out if I get bored.

I have a steady attitude and I am patient. I can sit still to get my paws cleaned when it is wet outside. I don't even mind getting a bath or my teeth brushed. I do get shy if you scare me or yell, so I could piddle on the the floor...oops! but otherwise, I'm HOUSEBROKEN! I love praise so teach me a trick! I have many stuffed toys but Moose is my favorite. He comes with me to bed. I like to sleep on the floor until the morning, then after my foster Dad goes to work I get in bed and lay in his spot! I don't lick much but I love to be petted. I don't even mind getting hugged and squeezed by little kids! So, please stop by the Petco in Lee's Summit to see me...I'm there most every Saturday....just waitin' for 'ya!!

Redmond is an absolutely AWESOME dog... sweet, gentle and just a pleasure to be around! If you're looking for a great dog to add to your family, please consider Redmond! Read more about Redmond on his Petfinder page.

Furry Kids' Refuge is especially in tuned with animals who have special needs. As a group, we rescue a lot of well adjusted, healthy dogs who find loving forever homes quickly.  Then there are those that have issues that make them not-so-highly adoptable...like "Ford."
FordFord is a Miniature Pincher released to Furry Kids' Refuge when his family could no longer care for him. He is over 8 years old but still has lots of spunk and love to share. Ford's special need is that he is blind…but don't let that scare you away.  He learns his way around very quickly and he is HOUSEBROKEN!!! He will bark to let you know he needs out to potty. Ford craves the closeness of his people and wants to be near you as much as possible.  He will bark to be in the same room as you! If you are not looking for a furry kid to be near you and wanting to be close then Ford is not the one for you! . Ford likes to crawl under his blanket and snuggle down for his naps. It is very sweet! Ford would do best with a less active family that just likes to chill out and enjoy life. He would even love another furry kid that just likes to snuggle.  Ford would be a great companion to someone wanting a calm, well behaved, less active but Velcro (stuck to your side) furry kid! Check out his Petfinder page for more details on Ford.

DaniHi! you all may remember me as Julie, which is my new mom’s name so I now go by Dani. The Rojas family adopted me January 2, 2010 at a adoption event at the Petco in Lee Summit. I was not willing to be touched at the Petco at all, and my new family was a little nervous about even getting me in the car. I am a puppy mill rescue that the Furry Kids Refuge saved so my trust in people was very little at this time.  They decided to take me home and thus started my new journey.

At first I didn't want to leave my new kennel. I didn’t know what was going on. I have a new brother, Jack, who is a miniature dachshund black and tan just like me. All he wanted to do was play.  After about a week I was finally confidant to give this playing thing a try. Then there were these things called stairs that I just couldn’t figure out. I would go down a couple sideways and run right back up.

After being with my new family for just a couple days. My mom was horrified to find blood all over the backyard, the hallway, and me. So she took me to the vet right away. They said I had a couple of teeth that needed to be pulled, periodontal disease, and ear mites. I am missing the tip of my right ear and it wasn’t healing so that’s where the blood was coming from. Mom had to get some info about my teeth from Robin at Furry Kid’s Refuge and she was very understanding and concerned that my teeth had just been looked at a couple months prior to adoption and already needed work. They called my mom back a couple days later and even though I was already adopted, they still cared about me and wanted to help my new family out with my vet bill. So my new family got to give me ear drops, antibiotics, and pain killers for our first couple of weeks together and trust me I didn’t make that easy for them!

Dani & JackFast forward seven weeks later, and you would be shocked at how far I have come. I wag my tail constantly. I love to be petted. I love, love, love, my new backyard and going on walks with mom and Jack when the weather is nice. My fur looks shiny and the fur on my ears is starting to grow back. I even enjoy wearing sweaters when its cold outside! I figured out those stairs, too.

I am still nervous around men but I follow commands and am very good at potty training. I still have a couple accidents, but I was never potty trained before.  I don’t hide in my kennel anymore, even when there are guests over.  Thank you for everything you have done for me Furry Kid’s Refuge. I am doing great thanks to all of your hard work and compassion, and finding me a home.
