SUMMER HEAT IS HERE!!...BE AWARE! |
As someone who has a strong dislike for hot weather, I am particularly sensitive to animals (or kids or the elderly) being left alone in a car. We’ve all opened a car door and been taken aback by the blast of heat that hits us after a car has been sitting closed up on a sunny day. Maybe people who aren't as bothered by the heat just don't understand the urgency of how quickly a car can heat up on a warm day. Even on a cool day, you don't feel hot, so you think it will be OK however, even when parked in the shade, animals can succumb to heatstroke or death if left in the car unattended.
A dog’s normal temperature is around 101 F degrees. They don't have sweat glands all over their bodies like humans do, so the main way they can cool off is by panting, which isn't very efficient. And panting won’t do much to cool them if they only have overheated air to breathe! Once a dog's body temperature gets over about 106, they are in danger of heatstroke. This can result in brain and organ damage after just 15 minutes.
So, what can you do? Educate yourself and others on the dangers of leaving animals unattended in a vehicle. Know the warning signs of heatstroke and learn what to do AND not to do if your pet is showing signs of heatstroke. Visit MyDogIsCool.com...through this Web site, you'll learn about what you can do to protect dogs from the dangers of hot cars. You can find out how quickly cars heat up in warm weather, whether it's too hot to take your dog along today, and how to get the word out that it's just not cool to leave a dog in a hot car, even for "just a minute."

HARLEY'S KINDEST KANSAS CITIAN
 |
Thousands of 3rd graders across the area were asked to write a one page essay for an event sponsored by Synergy Services about who they thought was their "Kindest Kansas Citian." The essay had to be a non-family member; many kids wrote about their special neighbors and friends and others about community leaders who have done good for our city. I was completely surprised and honored to receive a phone call from our fellow volunteer and Furry Kid adopter, Lisa Thursby, to tell me her son, Harley, had selected me as his Kindest Kansas Citian. Not only had he selected me (which made me feel like a million dollars!) but his essay was selected from around 10,000 essays to be one of the top 100 in the entire Kansas City area!!
Harley is a 3rd grader at Sunrise Point Elementary in Leawood and is an avid animal lover. He and his family have fostered many dogs for Furry Kids and Harley helps take exemplary care of them. For the past 6 weeks, he has helped foster Astra, who was rescued from the Olathe Animal Shelter with a broken leg. She is a little Schnauzer mix and Harley has adored her. Astra had her cast removed last week and went to her new family over the weekend. Harley misses her but he knows that by finding her a new home, he can save another life.
Harley wrote a beautiful essay for this contest and I am so very proud of him. He read his essay to his whole school and the parents of his classmates at a special assembly. He received a framed certificate to honor his award which was well deserved. This is an amazing accomplishment - Congratulations Harley - you are my Kindest Kansas Citian!

THANKS FOR YOUR GENEROSITY !!!

Girl Scout Troop 1062, St. Regis, pictured on the left, recently stopped by our Petco adoptions to drop off donations. They collected much needed dog food, treats, toys, etc. for the Furry Kids' Refuge rescue animals.
Brownie Troop 529 completed their community service project by collecting items for Furry Kids from April 26-30. They collected blankets, towels, toys, bowls, food, etc. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get a picture of them :-( |
A huge THANK YOU is in order to these hard working young ladies for collecting all the great items to donate to Furry Kids! Your thoughtfulness and support is greatly appreciated!!

Meet Maggie Mae....
We think Maggie is about 7 or 8 years young and is just as sweet as can be. She weighs about 38 pounds and is full grown which is a great size for most any family! Maggie is a little shy at first but you can tell she just wants to be around her people. Maggie loves other dogs and does well around cats but will bark at them when first encountering them. Maggie Mae is just about the most perfect furry kid you will ever meet. AND....she is housetrained so that is a definite BONUS!
Read more about Maggie Mae on her Petfinder page.

Furry Kids' Refuge is especially in tuned with animals who have special needs. As a group, we rescue a lot of well adjusted, healthy dogs who find loving forever homes quickly. Then there are those that have issues that make them not-so-highly adoptable...like "Gus." |
Gus is a 15 pound, full grown male Bichon about 8-9 years old. Gus was released to Furry Kids' Refuge from a family having a baby who no longer wanted him. Gus may be older but he still likes to play and is a active furry kid. Gus was diagnosed with a heart murmur rated at a 4 out of 5 (5 being the worse) which requires him to take a daily medication called Enalipril (very inexpensive). This murmur will not shorten his life if he is kept on this medication. His x rays showed cleared lungs which is a great sign.
Gus likes other dogs & cats. He also loves people but would do best in a home without younger children (under 12 years old) because he also has cataracts in both eyes which limit his vision when approaching him from behind. Children would forget this and most likely startle him. Gus is a wonderful little guy who is deserving of a loving forever home....please consider Gus in your search for a companion.
For more information on Gus, please check out his Petfinder page.

Daphney was dumped in the country and found by the side of the road needing help. She was so shy and timid...not knowing who to trust and fearing what might be done to her next. Fast forward 6 months and look at her now!
"I love Daphney and am very pleased that
I got to adopt her when I did!" says Natalie, who adopted Daphney in February.
Natalie's friend took some gorgeous photos of the pair and was gracious enough to share them with us.
Our hopes for all of our Furry Kids is that they find a wonderful forever home. That's obviously what Daphney has found with Natalie!
WAY TO GO, Daphney!!!
