NOVEMBER IS ADOPT-A-SENIOR PET MONTH |
Many times a senior dog will be passed over for a cute puppy or a younger, more active dog. These precious older animals continue to fill-up shelters and rescues yet they deserve so much more. Sure, having a puppy or young dog may be appealing, but giving a second chance to an older companion can be equally rewarding! Yes, there can be challenges to adopting an older pet. For example, knowing that you most likely will not have years and years to spend together. This was something that I thought about when I adopted my Darla. She was already 10 years old…how much longer would she live? What I decided was that it didn’t matter if it was another 10 years or 10 days…this dog “deserved” to live the rest of her life in a happy, loving home.
Darla asked me to tell you that there are many benefits to adopting a Senior pets; here are just a few:
- Tend to be calmer, more mellow …Darla is happy with the simple things in life…a cozy place to sleep ("her" couch!), good food (including lots of treats), and visits to the Doggie Park
- Easily trained…Darla has completed Canine Good Citizen training and is now a certified Therapy Dog for the Kansas City based Pets for Life organization
- Adjust quickly …it took no time at all for Darla to train me!
- Grateful for a second chance… There is no feeling quite like seeing your senior pet curled up and finally comfortable…knowing that they will now always be cared for and loved!
Darla’s life before Furry Kids stepped in was horrible and yet she is the sweetest, gentlest dog you will ever meet. Today, she shares her love willingly with everyone she meets and makes me smile every single day! If you're looking to add a new family member, PLEASE consider a senior pet...they have a lot to offer... the least of which is LOVE!

THANK YOU, St. John LaLande 8th Graders!!

|
Each year, St. John LaLande Catholic School in Blue Springs holds a Pet Blessing in conjunction with the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. This year's event, held on Wednesday, October 6th, was sponsored by the 8th grade students and their teachers, Casie Scott and Kelly Knust. In addition to the blessing of the animals, this event is also a Pet Supply drive which supports local area rescue groups. This year, Furry Kids' Refuge was lucky enough to be chosen as the recipient of their generosity.
The school donated
food, treats, toys, dish soap, newspapers, peanut butter, q-tips, cotton balls, and alot of blankets and beds...perfect for the winter! Check out these photos taken by the Kansas City Dog Examiner...it was a great day!
A huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone involved in this great event! THANKS for helping our Furry Kids!! |

She was known to us as Tubby first, an 8 year old female Golden Retriever who had traveled all the way from Texas to find her forever home and family. She was once a breeding dog that had been rescued and was in search of a family to love and spoil her. She was an older dog but just as sweet and gentle as could be with a wonderful, calm, temperament as most Golden's have. She rode well in a car, loved to go for walks or just hang out in the house watching TV. She had wonderful manners and was just a joy to be around. We were sure she would find a great home! And in November of 2007, she did! Our Tubby was adopted by Jen Jordan....became "Sweet Pea" and finally found her forever home where she was given the love she had always deserved.
In September, 2010, Sweet Pea lost her battle with cancer and made her way to the Rainbow Bridge. A note from Jen...
Today, she got her Angel Wings. After over a year of being told she "may" live
about a month, she lost her battle. She has been such a joy in my life and
brought much love and happiness. She will live forever in my heart. I can only
hope her time with me was as wonderful for her as was my time with her.
Thank you for letting me adopt her.
As you can tell from the photos on her Memorial page, Sweet Pea lived out her life very happy and very much loved!
THANK YOU, Jen, for giving Sweet Pea the love and life she so deserved! |

Kansas City Science Fiction And Fantasy Society Raises $1020 for Furry Kids!
|
The generous folks at KaCSFFS have again chosen Furry Kids as the charitable organization for their annual Contra Convention. They held a silent auction and collected donations for Furry Kids... which they have done for 5 years running!! We love being able to visit them during their auction and closing ceremonies. This year we brought Kricket, a little one-eyed Pug who is an FKR alumni and Timmy, a beautiful yellow Lab mix, who is available for adoption. Both had a great time with this amazing group of people.
The funds collected for Furry Kids will make a huge difference and go straight towards paying veterinary bills and buying more food!
We SO appreciate the support of KaCSFFS and their dedication to the rescue animals of Furry Kids!!! |
