NATIONAL PET DENTAL HEALTH MONTH

AVMADoes Fido's or Fluffy's breath smell bad?! That odor might signify a serious health risk, with the potential to damage not only your pet's teeth and gums but its internal organs as well. To address the significance of oral health care for pets, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and several veterinary groups are sponsoring National Pet Dental Health Month in February.

"Most people have no idea that dental health is so important to their pets, and that's why Pet Dental Health Month is such a great idea," explains Dr. Larry Corry, president of the AVMA. "In fact, veterinarians report that periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed problem in dogs and cats. This can lead to painful infections of the mouth, and in severe cases these infections can spread and become life-threatening conditions. During Pet Dental Health Month, the AVMA is encouraging all dog and cat owners to regularly brush their pet's teeth and regularly see their veterinarian for checkups."

SOPHIE RICHARDSON ROCKS!

Sophie & RosieA HUGE Thank You goes out to the Richardson family of Lee's Summit and their daughter, Sophie, who turned 7 years old on December 4th. For her Birthday, Sophie didn't want any presents for herself but instead asked for donations for the animals. As you can see from the picture, Sophie, with her dog Rosie, brought us lots of goodies including much needed food, treats, toys, bowls, & more! Furry Kids' Refuge is very thankful to Sophie for her generosity! What Sophie did was very thoughtful and I'm sure made her family very proud. We are proud of her too and we are very appreciative! THANK YOU, SOPHIE!

THANK YOU, PAT!!
Thanks, Pat!Furry Kids' was recently contacted by a very nice lady named Pat Hackling. Pat had some items to donate and wanted to know if we would be interested. As you can imagine, our answer was a definite YES! As you can see from the photo, Pat didn't just bring a few items, she brought a whole shopping cart full of blankets, towels, etc. And this donation couldn't have come at a better time! We had just put out a plea in our last newsletter for blankets. With the cold winter months upon us we needed kennel blankets to help keep our Furry Kids' nice and warm! So THANK YOU VERY MUCH, Pat....we really appreciate your generosity!

Happy Tail!!

KodieKodie was released to Furry Kids' Refuge from a commercial breeder. He was very sweet, loving & playful around other dogs and people. So when he got adopted quickly, we weren't surprised. But then a little while later he was returned because "he wasn't good with kids", " he wasn't housebroken", and "he had separation anxiety." Hearing this, we thought it was going to be challenging to find Kodie a great forever home. Luckily for Kodie, we were wrong...Kodie was adopted in May of 2010 and is now living the good life! Here's a note from his forever Mom:

I thought you might like an update on Kodie. He is a great dog! He even loves all kids and when I walk him every morning he runs up to all the groups of kids waiting on the school buses and lets them pet and scratch him. Whoever had him before was wrong about him not liking kids. I boarded him for two nights in July when my friend and I went to Branson and he did good... I waited awhile to get him groomed but he did good and I didn't have to leave him very long.

He never potties anywhere except outside and on the newspapers I have by the back door. He sleeps on the dog bed I already had and pulled the throw off of it so he could be right on it. He is so funny sometimes and playful! He can be sound asleep and hears me go to the front door and runs down there. If I go somewhere he waits by the door or at the top of the stairs until I return. We feel so blessed to have this little guy as he is so special!

Take a look at Kodie's Happy Tail page... before & after grooming photos....tooo cute!!!

STOP THE REPEAL!
The Fight To Protect Puppy Mill Dogs Isn't Over!!

Just last November, nearly one million Missouri voters said that dogs and puppies should be treated like loving pets, not some commodity on a production line. Yet, now, bills have been introduced into the Missouri state legislature to weaken, amend, or repeal the will of the people and Prop B.

What can you do about it?

With just a few clicks, you can send a message to your legislators to let them know you don't want them to repeal Prop B. It's free, takes only a minute and will help Missouri's dogs get the basic care they deserve.

Click HERE to take action now!

For more information on the repeal efforts, visit the Missourian's for the Protection of Dogs website.
