Perfect World!

The Good Ole Summer Time Brings Fun,
Relaxation and Also Some Hazards!!

Ahhh...the good life!

Most pet owners love their animals so much they want to take them everywhere, and summer is a great time to be together in the backyard or to hit the road for a fun vacation. However, even the healthiest pets can suffer from sunburn, dehydration or heat stroke if you aren't careful. By taking some simple precautions, you can celebrate the season and keep your pets happy and healthy. Check out these Tips from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

One of the tips, "Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle" bears repeating.... "On a hot day, a parked car can become a furnace in no time-even with the windows open-which could lead to fatal heat stroke," says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine at ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. Even on a cool day, you don't feel hot, so you think it will be OK however, even when parked in the shade, animals can succumb to heatstroke or death if left in the car unattended.

I'm Cool!A dog’s normal temperature is around 101 F degrees.  They don't have sweat glands all over their bodies like humans do, so the main way they can cool off is by panting, which isn't very efficient.  And panting won’t do much to cool them if they only have overheated air to breathe!  Once a dog's body temperature gets over about 106, they are in danger of heatstroke.  This can result in brain and organ damage after just 15 minutes.

So, what can you do? Educate yourself and others on the dangers of leaving animals unattended in a vehicle. Know the warning signs of heatstroke and learn what to do AND not to do if your pet is showing signs of heatstroke. Visit MyDogIsCool.com...through this Web site, you'll learn about what you can do to protect dogs from the dangers of hot cars. You can find out how quickly cars heat up in warm weather, whether it's too hot to take your dog along today, and how to get the word out that it's just not cool to leave a dog in a hot car, even for "just a minute."

Happy Birthday, Josie!Furry Kids' Refuge would like to extend a HUGE Thank You to Josie Sneed of Wentzville, MO!!

Josie recently celebrated her 8th birthday and instead of asking for toys or gifts for herself, she asked her friends to bring toys and supplies for the dogs and cats of Furry Kids' Refuge!! Josie's donation included lots of goodies including treats, toys, bowls, & more! Josie's grandmother told us that she is ..."very proud of her for her sacrifice to help out the dogs & cats" Well, we are very proud of her too, and the dogs & cats are very, very grateful for all the cool stuff they got...especially the toys!! :-)

THANK YOU, JOSIE! You Rock!!
Happy Tail!!

Scooby at the lake!Just goes to show, you can take the dog out of the Lake but you can't take the Lake out of the dog. His newest trick is when everybody is hanging out on the raft, they throw their cans in the Lake and Scooby retrieves them and he brings them to shore and sits and waits for the next empty can however he has tried to take full cans away from them - likes sticks and cans better than his throw toys - he has really fit into our way of life with gusto - he loves everybody!!!!!!! The only problem we have is when he sees kids playing in the water next door because he wants to join in - he is such a love - so glad he was our foster and now our very own. He is the perfect dog!!!!! He now knows when it is lake day - he sees George load the green totes into the van and he goes nuts so anxious to go.

Thanks for letting us adopt him!!!!!

Annie & HankI am sending along a photo of our two Furry Kids. We adopted Annie (she was "Pixie" when we adopted her) in June of 2008. She was a timid, underweight West Highland Terrier who had been a breeder for eight years. She is still a timid girl, but is such a sweetheart!

Last November, we came back for Hank (Uncle Henry) who was Widget or Mikey in his foster homes. He was a young, wild Cairn Terrier. Hank is growing up and is funny and affectionate. He is helping Annie to become more outgoing. They are both absolute delights, and very important members of our family.

Thanks, Furry Kids for all you do and all the lives you save.

AngieAngie, as we call her now, is doing fine. She loves the wide open spaces, hanging out with us outside or on the couch. She seems to have taken a fancy to my husband when he's home. She loves to wrestle and fetch her new toys. Our only problem seems to be she has forgotten some of her potty training, but we are working on that and it is improving. I've attached a few pictures of her for you to see. Thanks for saving her from extermination, she's a sweet girl.

Chelsea & LucyWe are happy to report that Chelsea she is making great strides in her adjustment. She is a very sweet and loving dog, and we enjoy her so much. She has gained some weight, has improved muscle tone in her hips, and has learned how to go up and down the stairs in our house. She is pretty much housebroken now, but she still hates to go outside if it is windy or wet.

She has made some progress with leash training, too. Yesterday, she walked to the end of our driveway while on the leash, which was a big step. We will be happy when she walks well enough on the leash to go out for walks in the neighborhood. Our other dog, Lucy, loves taking walks so it will be fun when Chelsea can go with us. Lucy and Chelsea are getting along pretty well. Lucy has only growled at Chelsea a couple of times, and then all has been well. I have attached 2 pictures. The second one is of Chelsea, after she had her first grooming, and the first is with her new "sister" Lucy. We are so happy she's part of our family now!
