Fostering
Could you open your home to a rescue dog or cat? Fostering is a very rewarding experience! We are always in need of foster homes, the more foster homes we have the more animals we can save. If you are interested in fostering, please fill out our foster application or call Kim at 816-699-3238. When you foster a rescue dog or cat, Furry Kids will supply food and other needed items and provide all veterinary care. You can foster whomever you like, whether they be a puppy or dog or kitten or cat! Your job will be to treat the animal as your own, teach them the ropes of being a great companion and housetrain if necessary. Many of our animals are already housetrained and have already lived in a home so are familiar with the ropes. You'll bring them to our adoption events and show them off to potential adopters. You can get as involved as you want, you can even interview potential adopters! Many people shy away from fostering thinking they would never be able to give them up because they would become too attached - but remember, each animal you foster and place in a forever home enables you to save another!!
2007 TWIN VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR - HAILEY AND DESTINY SHROYER
About Hailey...
I love fostering because I get to have a dog for as long as it takes for the dog to get adopted. You get to pick the dog you would like to foster. Fostering is good because one person can not take care of all the dogs that need a good home. This way several different people can help give each dog the love and affection it needs until its owner is found.
If you are caring for a dog for awhile, you may get attached to it. Just remember when it gets a home that it will be a great home and the dog will be very happy. So don't think you don't want to foster because you can't give it away (incase you get to attached) you will know it is going to a great home.
So if you ever see us at Petco on Saturdays, outside or inside, come and ask about fostering. Why we volunteer is to help the dogs and cats find a good home. How you could help is, you could walk the dogs, help set up cages, and water the dogs. You could also tell people interested in adopting a dog or cat about Furry Kids Refuge.
If you were interested in fostering, you would bring your dog or cat to Petco on Saturdays so people interested in adopting could see which dogs or cats need a home.
About Destiny...
Hi, my name is Destiny and I am a twin with Hailey who was just talking to you.
We are twelve and we have been fostering for a bout a year. We have fostered a lot of different breeds of dogs and puppies. The last dog I fostered was about 5 months old and his name was Leo. He is a beautiful border collie!
His new mom is so great. I am so glad she adotped him. They were a perfect match. We like to make sure the dogs are adopted by the right owners.
Furry Kids Refuge has all kinds of dogs for you to choose from. You will feel good knowing you rescued a dog or cat and helped place them in a loving home.
I volunteer every Saturday to help out with the dogs and cats. I love volunteering for Furry Kids Refuge because I love animals and I like to know they have gone to good homes. All hte people who help with Furry Kids Refuge are so nice.
2006 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - MEGAN BARELLI
Hi! My name is Megan! I am a 6th grader at Greenwood Elementary. I enjoy taking dance lessons, playing soccer, doing art, playing with my own pets, and most of all ( my new passion ) animal rescue! In the future, I would love to keep fostering furry kids and want to work with animals in some way my whole life.
I got started in animal rescue when my old nieghbors moved out and left 1 dog, 4 adult cats, and 4 kittens that were only 5 weeks old. We called our friend, Kim Accurso with Furrykids Refuge, to see if she could help these poor animals. My family and I fostered 2 of the adult cats and all 4 kittens! They have all found their forever homes. It was hard work, but a lot of fun at the same time! I had to teach my own animals and my foster animals to get along. I also had to clean a lot of litter boxes, help the mommy cat to ween her babies, and, of course, give them LOTS of love!
Now, I can't wait to go to adoptions on Saturday! When a dog or cat gets adopted, I feel both happy and sad. I guess it is because I know that there is one more furry kid out there that doesn't have to wonder where their forever home is. They just want a family to love them and a family that they can love back, a forever home So if you are thinking about adopting, I think you should because when you look a dog or cat in the eye, you can see how sad they really are. Sometimes they are scared too because they haven't had the loving touch of a human. Even if they have a good foster family, nothing can replace a great forever family!
PLEASE consider adopting a furry kid and save a life! Remember, when one furry kid finds their forever home, it allows another furry kid to find a foster home.
A Poem From My Foster Dog
TO MY FOSTER MOM (OR DAD)
THERE I SAT, ALONE AND AFRAID,
YOU GOT A CALL AND CAME TO MY AID.
YOU BUBDLED ME UP WITH BLANKETS AND LOVE.
AND, WHEN I NEEDED IT MOST, YOU GAVE ME A HUG.
I LEARNED THAT THE WORLD WAS NOT ALL SCARY AND COLD,
THAT SOMETIMES THERE IS SOMEONE TO HAVE AND TO HOLD.
YOU TAUGHT ME WHAT LOVE IS, YOU HELPED ME TO MEND,
YOU LOVED ME AND HELAED ME AND BECAME MY GOOD FRIEND.
AND JUST WHEN I THOUGHT YOU'D DONE ALL YOU DO,
THERE CAME ALONG NOT ONE NEW LESSON, BUT TWO.
FIRST YOU SAID, "SWEETHEART, YOU'RE READY TO GO,
I"VE DONE ALL I CAN, AND YOU'VE LEARNED ALL I KNOW."
THEN YOU BUNDLED ME UP WITH A BALNKET AND KISS,
AND ALONG CAME A NEW FAMILY-- OH WHAT A BLISS.
THEY TOOK ME TO THEIR HOME, FOREVER TO STAY.
AT FIRST I THOUGHT YOU HAD SENT ME AWAY,
THEN THAT SECOND LESSON BECAME PERFECTLY CLEAR;
NO MATTER HOW FAR, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE NEAR.
AND SO, FOSTER MOM, YOU KNOW I'VE MOVED ON,
I HAVE A NEW HOME, WITH TOYS AND A LAWN.
BUT I"LL NEVER FORGET WHAT I LEARNED THAT FIRST DAY---
YOU NEVER REALLY GIVE YOUR FOSTERS AWAY.
YOU GAVE ME THESE THOUGHTS TO REMEMBER YOU BY,
WE MAY NEVER MEET AGAIN, AND NOW I KNOW WHY--
YOU'LL REMEMBER I LIVED WITH YOU FOR A SHORT TIME,
I MAY NOT BE YOURS, BUT YOU'LL ALWAYS BE MINE. |
